Maria was on the freeway when she had to pull over because she ran out of gas. Her 4 and 6-year old children were with her. She was waiting for a friend to arrive to help her, when a police car pulled up behind her. The officer walked up to Maria and asked for an ID. She told the officer she ran out of gas and was waiting for her friend. He requested her ID again. Maria did not have her identification with her. The officer called Border Patrol and Maria wound up in detention in Florence with a $7,500 bond. She is not be able to afford to hire an attorney or pay the bond amount. Her children have now been without their mother for 6 months.
